Backup basics for families and small business

A simple explanation of why backups matter, what should be backed up, and how to reduce the risk of losing important files.

A lot of people assume their files are safe until something goes wrong. Hard drives fail, laptops get damaged, accounts get locked, and accidental deletion happens all the time.

What should be backed up

At minimum, think about:

  • family photos and videos
  • business documents
  • invoices and records
  • important emails
  • website files
  • key account access details

Use more than one location

A good backup should not exist in only one place. Consider a combination of local backup and cloud backup.

Automate where possible

Manual backups are easy to forget. Automated backups are far more reliable.
